Support Our Haitian Students' Recovery and Safety at Haitian Roots

A recent accident at one of our schools has deeply affected our community. A solar panel fell from a neighboring building and landed in the school courtyard, injuring several students. Some were rushed to the hospital, with a few in critical condition. Thankfully, all are now recovering well. There is an urgent need to support these students and their families as they face significant medical expenses, and to improve safety measures at the school to prevent future accidents.

The Incident and Its Impact

The accident happened unexpectedly during school hours, causing panic and distress among students, staff, and families. The solar panel, dislodged from a nearby building, crashed into the courtyard where children were playing. Several students suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe. The injured students were transported to a local hospital quickly.

The medical costs for treatment and recovery are estimated to exceed $30,000. This financial burden falls heavily on the families, many of whom already face economic challenges. We are committed to helping these families cover medical bills and related expenses so the students can focus on healing without added stress.

How We Are Responding

Safety is our top priority. After the incident, we immediately took steps to secure the school environment:

  • Inspection of neighboring buildings to identify and fix potential hazards.

  • Assessment of additions needed around the courtyard.

  • Regular safety audits to monitor and maintain secure conditions.

  • Staff training on emergency response and student safety protocols.

Our board member, Isson, traveled to Haiti to visit the school and check on the students personally. His presence has helped us understand the situation on the ground and coordinate support more effectively.
